Synopsis
Four turbulent decades during The Troubles in Northern Ireland
The real-life Dolours Price was married for two decades (1983-2003) to Irish actor Stephen Ree.
During this time, Ree appeared in the film for which he is perhaps best known in the United States: the 1992 romantic thriller The Crying Game
In that film, Ree plays Fergus, a very reluctant and ambivalent member of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) – the same organization Price was associated with for many years… I recommend reading the book for background/additional information, but the series does a fantastic job of covering the material.
Very well played through the multiple eras of the main characters
The bigger themes for me are: -in war, everyone believes they are on the right side; -how far will you go to achieve a cause you believe in, and what happens when that belief is tested or undermined; – pawns of war sacrifice, which characterize the greatest risk, are usually easily discarded in the end – the bigger the “code”; silence in communities sometimes goes too far – the spoils of war tend to end up in the hands of bureaucrats, not soldiers.
