Synopsis
Acclaimed filmmaker Mike Lee returns to the contemporary world with a fierce, compassionate and often darkly humorous study of family and the thorny bonds that bind us together. Reuniting with Leigh for the first time since the Oscar-nominated Secrets and Lies, the stunning Marianne Jean-Baptiste plays Pansy, a frightened, grief-stricken woman who can rage at her husband, her son and anyone in sight in her own way. Meanwhile, her laid-back younger sister, played by Michelle Osteen (Another Year), is a single mother with a life as different as Pansy’s conflicted nature: her salon filled with the communal warmth of clients and daughters. This moving film from a veteran playwright takes us to the depths of kinship, duty and the human mystery: that despite a lifetime of pain and hardship, we still find ways to love those we call family.
