Synopsis
While scouring the depths of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists come across the most terrifying life form in the universe. [Last updated August 14, 2024] Director Fede Alvarez turned to the special effects team from Alien 2 (1986) to work on the creatures. Physical sets, practical creatures, and miniatures were used whenever possible to help ground the later visual effects work.

When Rain turns off the ship’s gravity and shoots all the aliens, all of their blood hangs in the air in long, blurry patterns. Real-life zero gravity causes liquids to form into spherical shapes, not spread out in long, flat clumps like in the movie. The 20th Century Studios fanfare freezes and becomes ominous, like in Alien 3 (1992), leading into the film’s opening scene.

Nothing special, a lot of the really positive reviews are exaggerated
The characters, for the most part, are completely flabby and devoid of any real character, except Andy. I honestly had no emotional attachment to most of the characters and most of them were just annoying and rude. The film was sleazy at times, seeming to take forever to get going and relying too heavily on Alien franchise cliches to add any real color to the plot and script.
As a huge fan of the originals, I was disappointed
The special effects were decent enough and the original xenomorph design was excellent, although the facehuggers look worse in this film than they did in Alien and Aliens for some reason. Don’t get too excited about the current hype surrounding Romulus, it’s not a terrible film, but it’s not great either. Whether they’re exploring the stars, escaping dystopias, or making the world a better place, these women are what sci-fi is all about.
