Synopsis
Emilia Pérez follows four extraordinary women in Mexico, each searching for their own happiness. Cartel leader Emilia enlists Rita, an unpopular lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live authentically as herself. Karla Sofía Gascón talks about the two years of preparation that went into this demanding role in Jacques Audiard’s film and the two extremes of her personality that she had to play as Emilia and Manitas. And not only that, she does it to perfection
A wild and crazy rollercoaster of a film that mixes crime, comedy, musical and thriller all in one and it pulls it off with flying colours! The four actresses at the centre are the force and were directed to perfection by Audiard. Karla plays her pre- and post-transition character as she does so naturally, having done it publicly as an actress. It’s a powerful performance that is so typical of our times. I’m proud to live in a time where a trans actress is playing a trans role. The tragedy of leaving a life, but the promise of the one she’s always needed. Zoe manages to sing, dance, cry and laugh and everything I think an actor dreams of doing, let alone a film. I’ve never seen a film of hers before and I’m so glad this is my first because she shines!
And she has an amazing voice!
There’s a scene of her in the car, realising what’s just happened, and she breaks down in hysterics. Think Margo in Tonya or Glenn in Dangerous Liaisons. That scene alone should win her an Oscar. Selena, who I was most excited to see this movie for, totally rocks it. Playing a mafia wife, the kind of cold, bubbling under the surface woman who needs to revisit IMHO because as a girl who has endured intense scrutiny and then gone through psychosis, she knows all too well what it means to keep a lid on things for too long. The only time during the screening where I felt like I was having an out of body experience is when her character Jessi finally unleashes her emotions on us, the audience, after years of being oppressed. The agony and anger is in her voice. It’s proof of why she said acting is her true calling and how passionate she is.
And it complements the work of the other 3 actresses perfectly
It would be foolish to still think she’s a Disney kid and has something left to prove. Her acting journey is truly that exciting as a fan for almost 2 decades. Finally, Adriana’s character is like the sun in the otherwise dark and twisted world the film lives in. It’s touching! She brings love and sweetness to the story through her work. One important thing to note is that this film is like an opera. It’s reminiscent of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which was also almost entirely sung. Emotionally it’s definitely intense like one, with little moments of calm when you realize you’re watching a movie.
The cinematography was brilliant
At the end of the film, Selena’s character is lying almost unconscious in the passenger seat while her lover drives in a rage. The way the camera pans from the car to her face… it looked like a painting, very poetic yet tragic. I’m so glad I watched this before it came out on Netflix. It’s amazing when a movie can make you feel that way. Make you break out of your normal self and go a little crazy. No need to waste your time endlessly scrolling – here’s the entire lineup of new movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix this month.
