Synopsis
Delia Ballmer, an assistant at the agency, met Sweeney, who confessed to killing his ex-girlfriend.
Based on a true story of the crime
Ballmer rebuilt his life to confront Sweeney seven years later after he was arrested for another murder.
The bodies were dumped in the canals of Rotterdam (not Amsterdam) and London
I’m not usually a big fan of those four-part TV dramas that seem to be all the rage at the moment, as they often veer towards the absurd, but I thought I’d give this one a try as it’s based on true events and it certainly didn’t disappoint.
Overall, it was a bit heavy-handed, had to cover a long period of time, and some of the other minor characters were a bit wooden, but it didn’t spoil my enjoyment
Anna Maxwell Martin’s performance as the key character was outstanding and even though she was the “victim”; she turned out to be an extremely hard person to like and didn’t do much to help herself.
I thought it was excellent television, and despite my negative opinion of Ballmer, Sweeney is the unmistakable monster here
It will be interesting to watch the documentary with the real Delia Ballmer to see if she comes across as astute and abrasive as she is portrayed in the dramatization – as she was even before her ordeal.
