Synopsis
It follows a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts who use the town’s sudden interest in the occult to establish a reputation as a satanic metal band, until a strange series of events sets off a witch hunt that brings them back together. ;is a nod to 80s slashers as well as high school drama, so I went into it expecting to be bombarded with a long list of clichés rooted in both genres
Hysteria ! It’s a thriller/horror set in small-town America in the 1980s that centers around the mysterious death of a teenager and the spreading panic over his alleged connection to a high school metal band and its satanic cult following.
But then again, they’re teenagers
Instead, I thought the characters were so well cast and the dialogue so well written that I was able to relate to the story without feeling like everything was downright cheesy. Any discomfort I had in this regard stemmed from the fact that teenagers (and their decision-making) can be frustrating as hell.
It’s a really well-balanced cocktail of murder-mystery and paranormal horror
The power of religious and social prejudice over the community forms a major driving force of the story, but overall it is Hysteria! The show reveals its secrets gradually so that we understand what is happening in front of the main characters (rather than during the twist in the final episode), but not before we have to guess who will take drastic measures in favor of their own plans.
In any case, it’s nice to see all the high schoolers, freaks, and nerds come together, if only briefly, while addressing Satan around a candle-lit pentagram
For fans of everything related to the 80s, and especially their heavy music scenes, You will also have to experience the rush of excitement from the soundtrack, which includes a number of artists such as Iron Maiden, Kiss, Mötley Crüe and Alice Cooper.Hysteria! It shows the power of suggestion during the satanic panic of the 1980s and exposes us to the warring forces that seek to either unite the community or tear it apart.
